North Shore Bicycles began in 2003 as a small shop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. At the time, Kobylinski had been riding his bike since he was three years old. He fell in love with cycling early on and spent most of his childhood racing BMX bikes around town. In high school, he competed in track events and ran cross-country. After graduating college, he moved to San Francisco where he worked in IT while continuing to race mountain bikes.

In 2005, Kobylinski opened a bicycle store called “The Bike Shop” in downtown Chicago. His customers loved the bikes he sold there and asked him why he wasn’t selling them online. So, he launched a website and named it “NS Bicycles” because it stood for “North Side Bicycles.”

While building the brand, Kobylinski realized that bicycles could be much cooler than what was being offered online. He wanted to make sure that anyone buying a bike from him felt like they were getting something special. This led him to start designing custom frames and components. While working on one particular project, he met a local artist whose work inspired Kobylinski to design a full line of graphics for the brand.
